Getting Ready to Drive in Illinois? Prepare for the Illinois DMV Test!
If you want to drive legally in Illinois, you’ll need a valid driving license. To apply for an instruction permit or driver’s license in Illinois, you must complete an Application for Driver’s License. The law will also require passing a vision and Illinois DMV written test.
For the vision test, an applicant must have a vision of 20/40 in at least one eye with or without corrective lenses. If you fail this test or if you wear a special type of lenses, you should contact the Illinois DMV Call Support Center for further advice.
An applicant will need to undertake an Illinois DMV written test for all license types. The test determines a candidate’s knowledge of road rules, safe driving methods, road signs, and regulations regarding the use of alcohol and drugs while behind the wheel. To pass this test, an applicant must answer a minimum of 14 out of 20 questions correctly. The applicant must also correctly answer at least two of the four road sign questions.
Below, each of the important constituents of the Illinois DMV written test has been broken down to help you learn what you need to know to ace your written test.
Rules of the Road
This section takes an applicant through traffic control, intersections, and turns, right of way, how to react to emergency vehicles, how to pass, and how to park. Applicants learn parking regulations and the different types of parking, such as hill parking, parallel parking, etc. In addition, learners learn how to pass on the left, right, and right. School buses are also covered in this category.
Road signs are a sub-sector of this chapter. Learners learn the meaning and usage of different road signs and traffic signals. Pavement markings, traffic lights, and traffic officers are included in this category. Applicants should put in extra effort to learn about the different road signs, such as regulation signs, destination signs, warning signs, and service signs. Road signs knowledge adds more weight to your written Illinois DMV test as it is compulsory for each applicant to get at least 2 of the four questions regarding road signs correctly to proceed to the driving test.
Safe Driving Techniques
In this category, defensive driving, driver anticipation, driver distractions, aggressive drivers, speeding, and road rage are covered. In addition, the use of seat belts, child safety seats, and airbags is given an in-depth look in this section. Learners are taught how to drive safely in the work zone and through roundabouts and how to handle fatigue and drowsiness.
The use of alcohol and other drugs is a sub-section of this category. Applicants learn what alcohol and other drugs do, the laws and regulations in place regarding driving under the influence, how chemical tests are conducted, and the consequences of using alcohol and other drugs.
To pass a written DMV test, an applicant must learn about various special driving conditions, such as railroad crossings, expressways driving at night, driving in the rain, snow, or fog, driving in the winter season, and driving emergencies.
Learners are also taught how to share the road with pedestrians, cyclists, motorcyclists, skateboarders, large vehicles, slow-moving vehicles, all-terrain vehicles, and horse riders. How to respond to a traffic crash, including the administration of emergency first-aid and reporting a crash to the DMV, is also addressed.
