Getting Ready to Drive in New York? Prepare for the DMV Test NY

DMV Test NYIf you’re getting ready to obtain a driver’s license in New York, you may be aware that this state is one of the more challenging ones to obtain. The DMV test NY can certainly be passed, but learning what you need to know will take some time.

Preparing for the Test

To be able to take the test, you will have to obtain a learner permit initially. If you’re under 18, you’ll have to wait six months after you obtain the permit to schedule your test. You’ll also have to have several supervised practice driving hours documented. Make sure that you have this done and documented to avoid any problems.

New York also requires all drivers to complete a driver education course. This can be done with a standard 5-hour pre-licensing course; many high schools and colleges offer this or a similar course. Ensure that the DMV approves this.

Taking the Pre-Licensing Course

This course aims to provide new drivers with the essential knowledge they need to be safe on the road. The following topics will be covered in this course:

  • Driving within the transportation system
  • Driver habits and skills
  • Feelings, attitudes, and avoiding risk
  • Alcohol, drugs, and driving

This course will take five hours, although some high school and college classes may be longer and cover additional information. This course is offered through high schools and colleges but may also be taken at driving schools. To find any providers that offer the course, look online for the nearest available course.

Once you’ve completed this course, you’ll be given a pre-licensing course certificate or an MV-278. If you complete the course through high school or college, you’ll receive a student certificate or an MV-285. You must have one of these forms to schedule your road test and ensure that you bring the original certificate to the test to turn it in to the license examiner.

The course does not offer any hands-on driving instruction, although some driving classes may also have this component. This is not required but is a good idea. The course certificate will be valid for one year, so make sure that you take the course within a year of when you want to obtain your license.

Complete Supervised Practice Driving

If you’re under 18, you’ll have to complete supervised driving practice hours. You’ll need at least 50 hours of practice driving. Additionally, New York requires that at least 15 hours of driving be done at night and 10 hours in moderate to heavy traffic. To verify that you’ve completed these hours, you’ll bring a certificate of supervised driving or an MV-262 completed by a parent or guardian. This is not required if you’re over 18, although you should practice driving before taking the test.

Practice for the Test

When taking the test, the DMV will grade each driver on certain aspects of driving. If you want to be in the best shape to drive the test, you may want to brush up on your driving skills. These are the components that you’ll be graded on:

  • Steering- steer smoothly and avoid any abrupt movements
  • Acceleration- should be done smoothly and moderately
  • Braking- slow brake as much as possible
  • Speed- follow the speed limits
  • Following distance- keep an adequate space between you and the driver ahead of you
  • Traffic signs, signals, and markings- know the meanings and follow them
  • Lane position the car in the correct lane and signal before turning
  • Stopping position- make sure to stop behind the line or crosswalk

Taking the Test

You can schedule and take the road test once you have the required documentation and hours. You will have to have a vehicle to take the test, so make sure you have one before scheduling. The test is relatively short, but the process may take a few hours, so plan if needed. This information will put you in the best possible shape to pass the test.
