6 Tips to Pass the California Driver’s Permit Test On Your First Attempt

California Driver's Permit TestThe California driver’s permit test is created to ensure that everyone who passes it has the knowledge required to be a safe driver. The more theoretical road knowledge you possess, the better driver you will be.

If you aspire for a driving license, you must know that driving entails a major responsibility. Here are six tips to help you pass your written driving test on your first attempt:

Know the basic driving rules

It is essential to memorize the basic driving rules and laws. Knowing them will boost your confidence during your written test and help you behind the wheel when you are ready to go on the road.

You must try to understand the concepts behind the content rather than passively memorizing it. Your preparation should be good enough for you to recall vital aspects such as speed limits and safety measures instantly.

Defeat Anxiety

It is normal to feel nervous if you encounter a question you don’t know the answer to. Test anxiety can lead to racing thoughts, overwhelming fear, and inability to concentrate.

However, letting nervousness take over will hamper your judgment. Stay calm, take a deep breath, and choose the best answer.

It is said that feeling anxious during a test is similar to that of stage fright on a person. Before the exam, surround yourself with supportive family members and friends. They will help boost your confidence by motivating you.

Try to schedule your California driver’s permit test early in the morning to get it done quickly and avoid stressing over it on test day. If that is impossible, find ways to relieve tension before the test.

Adopt healthy habits

Avoid cramming and pulling all-nighters before the test day. Resting well at night will help your mind absorb the content you’ve studied during the day. Sleeping for at least 7-9 hours every night, especially the night before your test, is recommended.

On the day of your test, start by having a nutritious breakfast. Consuming a balanced amount of proteins, carbohydrates, and fruit is advisable, rather than something that would give you a sugar rush followed by a crash.

Stay Positive

Tell yourself that you can succeed by repeating positive affirmations. Focus on one task at a time and take deep breaths to de-stress before the test.

Do not try to quiz yourself right before the test starts—you may find yourself at a loss due to rising nervousness. The best way to wrap up your preparation is to do a quick review of the summary of important points.

Stay focused while you study, and defeat the urge to procrastinate. Do not schedule your test too soon; give yourself enough days to prepare. Draft a study plan for the written test, which you can, of course, tweak if need be.

Read all the questions carefully

Make sure you go through all the questions carefully before answering them. Traffic laws may seem simple enough, but the examiner may set a question where you would have to consider the effect of multiple factors on a given situation before choosing an answer.

The passing threshold for the California DMV test is 83%. If you are below 18, you will have to answer 38 out of 46 correctly, whereas if you are above 18, you will be given 36 questions and must answer a minimum of 30 correctly.

Please review your answers before submitting them

If you are taking a paper exam, review all your answers before submitting them. This will ensure that you have not missed any questions and also allow you to revise any answers you were unsure about.

While attempting the test, do not spend too much time on any question you are confused about. Make an intelligent guess and pick the answer you think is correct.

Once you feel well-prepared for the California driver’s permit test, take the practice test again. This will improve your confidence level and ensure you have covered all the important aspects.

This practice test will also help you identify your weak spots, if any, so that you can go through them for the final time. On the day of the exam, enter the room with a positive and confident attitude.
